Special Olympian conquers Kilimanjaro
SINGAPORE earned a spot in the history books on Monday, when Mr Salihin Sinai became the first Singaporean Special Olympics athlete in Asia to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa.
Mr Salihin said: "It was a very tough climb but I just ignored the pain and pushed myself with all my might."
The 24-year-old dental technician was part of an international eight-man team that went on the five-day hike to the peak of Africa's tallest mountain, 5,895m above sea level.
The team - which included Tanzanian Special Olympics athlete Herith Suleiman and Singapore permanent resident, private investor and adventurer Michael Dee - began their ascent last Wednesday.
They braved harsh terrain and cold temperatures. Mr Salihin suffered from altitude sickness midway through the hike.
"At 4,000m, there was a lot less oxygen so I couldn't breathe and I felt like vomiting," said Mr Salihin. "I just pushed myself to continue."
About 30 family members, friends and well-wishers were at Changi Airport Terminal 3 yesterday to welcome him home. He was accompanied on the flight back by Special Olympics Singapore volunteer Yeo Jia Chyang and Mr Dee.
Despite an 18-hour flight home from Tanzania - which included stops in Nairobi and Doha - Mr Salihin remained cheerful. He greeted his friends and family and said that he was proud and excited to have had the chance to represent Singapore on the climb.
Mr Salihin, who was born with low IQ, has been a part of the Special Olympics team since 1999, winning one gold, one silver and one bronze medal for swimming and two bronze medals for badminton in two Special Olympics World Summer Games.
