Phi Zeta honors given to faculty, students

Dr Gogal received the Pfizer Award for Research Excellence for the quality and quantity of research manuscripts, he has produced over the last three years, and the service it provides to the scientific community.

Park received the John M. Bowen Award for Excellence in Research. Most of the work of the park is to describe trends in animal disease.

Dr. Schmiedt was awarded the clinical research in recognition of its progress in understanding the mechanisms of hypertension post-transplantation, a finding that will benefit both animals and humans.

Drs. Shannon Holmes and David Jimenez, both assistant professors in the department of anatomy and radiology, won the Outstanding Hospital Service Award. The team was recognized for providing a "remarkable level of service ... during the present shortfall of faculty" and for implementing new technologies in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital's radiology service, such as voice-recognition software that directly transcribes clinical records to the hospital's electronically-based medical records.

Dr.Murray Hines, a professor in the Department of Pathology and the head of the Veterinary Diagnostic Tifton and experimental laboratory, was awarded the Charles Dobbins for excellence in service. It was recognized for building strong relationships historically the laboratory with groups of producers and veterinarians in maintaining a "customer-centric" culture at TVDIL and his involvement and leadership in a number of outreach .

Dr. Rajeev Sreekumari, an assistant professor in the department of infectious diseases based on TVDIL, won the Outstanding Service Laboratory. She heads the bacteriology and mycology sections of TVDIL, and her laboratory is the only one in Georgia approved by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory for performing culture of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (the cause of Johne's disease in ruminants).

The David Tyler Award for Advances in Teaching was awarded to Dr. Michelle Barton, the Fuller Callaway professor of large animal internal medicine in the department of large animal medicine.

The Morrow B. Thompson Award was presented this year to Dr. Shawn Zimmerman, who is a third-year resident in clinical pathology. Sponsored by Dr.Dolores Kunze, Thompson Award is awarded to a student or senior resident who excels in veterinary clinical pathology.

- A fresh addition to the Oregon Willamette Valley music scene. Although a local to the area now, she brings a touch of her back east urban roots to the Willamette Valley. She has performed jazz standards and originals at local wineries, eateries and special events over the past few years. Her first CD, White Shirt Black Suit, was recorded with an ensemble of jazz musicians, two of which are her own family members and released a year ago. Joanne's vocals are smooth and dreamy. - singer/songwriter and multi instrumentalist. His sound and songs come from a love for ambiance, building tension release, eclectic rhythm and descriptive storytelling.
