Inagural motorcycle run Sunday aids Crime Stoppers

Brant-Brantford Crime Stoppers is giving people a chance to have some fun and raise money to help solve crime.

That's the goal of inaugural Crime Stoppers motorcycle poker run Sunday. The event begins at the Polish Hall on Pearl Street with registration at 11 a.m.

"A lot of people don't realize this, but Crime Stoppers relies solely on sponsorships and donations, as well as the money generated by fundraising events, like the motorcycle poker run," said Leslie Barker, who is leading Saturday's event. "We don't receive any tax dollars and raising money for Crime Stoppers has been a pretty big challenge in recent years.

"Crime Stoppers is extremely effective way of fighting crime. Locally, it has led to the recovery of millions of dollars worth of stolen property, as well as the seizure of illegal drugs."

Saturday's event will include plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy, Barker said.

"We're having a celebrity picture and autograph-signing with Walter Gretzky, Amy and Jordan Szoke and we have live (musical) entertainment from 11 a.m. to noon with 'Holding Sticks' featuring Dennis Hull and Purple Joe - (Kirk Griesser)," she said. "When the riders return, we'll have the band McKenna playing."

Riders get a program, scorecard and rules. They set off from the Polish Hall with their first card. They will make stops at the J.D. Jutzi Gas Bar and Car Wash in Ayr , Tri-CIty Cycle at the South Works Mall in Cambridge and Royal Distributing in Guelph and pick up cards at each location.

Upon returning to the Polish Hall, the riders will get their final card. The first prize goes to the rider with the winning poker hand.

The lunch and dinner provided to the riders is being prepared by Strodes BBQ and Deli.

The event will feature door prizes, 50/50 tickets and people will have a chance to purchase Crime Stoppers T-shirts. Lunch and dinners tickets will also be available for purchase by the public.

The CKPC Community Cruiser and the Tourism Brant special events van also will be at the event.
