Interview: Fernando Peire and Cleo Rocos

MIND your manners and hold onto your hot plates, there’s an inspector about! Gastronomic guru Fernando Peire, the boss of London’s most famous celebrity haunt The Ivy, has served everyone from Meryl Streep and Sir Paul McCartney to Princess Margaret – and now he’s taken on the role of the Restaurant Inspector in Channel 5’s new series which helps smaller, struggling venues and their stubborn owners attract more customers.

‘Eating should be a spiritual as well as a culinary experience,’ says 52-year-old Fernando, who’s risen up the ranks from maître d’ to managing director of the top West End eatery. ‘I’m a people person first and foremost, and the restaurant business is much more a people business than it is a food business.’

It’s also a starry business. Many of Fernando’s closest friends are glamorous celebrities, such as the gorgeous and irrepressible Cleo Rocos, who’s equally passionate about having a fine time while fine dining. And drinking, so it would seem. ‘I’m the president of The Tequila Society – in fact, I’ve been deemed the most influential woman in the tequila business!’ laughs 48-year-old Cleo, still fondly remembered for her crazy comedy sketches with the late and much lamented Kenny Everett.

We clearly couldn’t take these bon viveurs to any old greasy spoon for our lunchtime chitchat, so it’s off to the stunning French-Vietnamese restaurant Bam-Bou in London’s fashionable Fitzrovia, where we learnt about the horrors of naff salad bars, Madonna’s no-way takeaway – and keeping the peace in the most notorious Celebrity Big Brother of all!


At one, reservation bookings were taken on Post-it notes and it didn’t matter if they got lost – that’s so annoying for the person who’s booked a table! In another, the staff only came to your table when the chef sent them with orders, otherwise they’d just huddle around the bar talking about lipstick, discos and their latest boyfriends – and
I know because we had secret cameras!


The producers meet the restaurateurs and explain a consultant will be coming to help them. They know the cameras are there, and they’re expecting me to arrive incognito at the weekend, when it’s busy – but I go in the day after the cameras have been put in, when they’re really not expecting me. Also, when the production team are preparing them, they tend to say: ‘When is she meant to be coming?
