Chattahoochee Chatter: Elvis joins the crowd at Lions game

We start today’s Chatter with a rather interesting group of fans spotted Saturday night at the Columbus Lions game.

Team managing partner John Hargrove was sitting next to Columbus State University President Tim Mescon, who was sitting next to Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson, who was sitting next to a gentlemen wearing hunting camouflage, who was sitting next to ... Elvis.

Yes, it was a 1970s Elvis wearing sideburns and a jumpsuit.

We can only imagine the conversation.

Might Synovus Financial Corp. Chairman Richard Anthony be ready to hang it up and head off to retirement-land in Alabama, from where he originally came to the Columbus-based company?

Though he hasn’t signaled such intentions yet, the longtime banking executive, who is in his mid-60s, already has taken two steps toward that move.

First was his turning over the reins as chief executive officer of the struggling regional bank to Kessel Stelling last year after Anthony suffered a serious illness and took a leave of absence. Anthony retained the chairman title and has since recovered from the ailment.

But now comes the recent sale of his Springdale Drive home in the city’s Midtown area to a group called Summerton Inn Inc., according to city records, with the dwelling fetching $857,500.

Of course, the incentive for Anthony to stick around awhile longer is that restrictions under the Troubled Asset Relief Program keep the top five executives of Synovus, and any other TARP recipient, from receiving certain retirement compensation until the federal money is repaid.

Synovus still owes $968 million in TARP money and has only said it, will repay that when it turns a profit, which Stelling has said the goal for that to happen is before this year ends.

The Chatter would like to wish Georgia State Rep. Calvin Smyre, the dean of the Columbus delegation, a speedy recovery.

Smyre sent an email on Tuesday saying he would “be on hiatus for a few weeks.”

He was scheduled to have hip surgery Wednesday at Hughston Orthopedic Hospital in Columbus.

Smyre and his new hip should be back in the game just in time for the General Assembly’s special sessions for redistricting.

Gov. Nathan Deal has not set the dates, but it will likely be mid-August.

Speaking of the General Assembly, Sen. Josh McKoon, a Columbus Republican in his rookie term, is moving up the ladder a little.

McKoon was recently appointed to serve on the Senate Policy Group, which will help research and craft legislation based on the best ideas from other states and the statewide “Solution Summits” currently being held around the state. One of the forums was held Tuesday night in Columbus.

Here is an authentic B & K Elvis Jumpsuit. It is in great shape. It is blue gabardine with inset white leather, leather creases suddenly, buttons, white satin and gold stud work. It's really a nice suit. The pictures make it look a little dull. It is not. He jumps really. The work is very shiny stud with the exception of some of the smaller ones. The belt is not included. Measures meet the top of the shoulder to the bottom of the leg 63. "Shoulder seam to shoulder seam is 19". Circumference is 74 ". Size is about 40" and inseam is 30 ". The costume can be modified some to fit you. I'm 6'1". I wear a jacket 42 long. My shirt measurement is 17X35,36 (I have long arms). The suit is big for me, but the sleeve lenth is a little short. I Think it would fit someone who is about 5'9" to 6' weighing about 210 to 220. It could be altered to fit me fine but the sleeves would still be a little short. So if you have arms that are a little shorter then mine you can pick up an original B & K for a great price. Suit is fully lined.
