Darden Restaurants Inc.’s fiscal fourth-quarter earnings rose 19%, as the casual-dining chain turned in another weak showing at Olive Garden. Shares were down 1.6% at $48.98 premarket.
First Republic Bank said its boosted offering of 13 million shares priced at a 1.6% discount to the stock’s Thursday close. Shares slipped 1% premarket to $31.97.
Acorda Therapeutics Inc. will pay up to $35 million to Medtronic Inc. for global development and commercialization rights to the medical-device maker’s magnesium formulation as a potential treatment for neurological traumas like spinal cord and brain injuries. Shares of Acorda declined 1% to $32 premarket. Shares of Medtronic were inactive.
Xyratex Ltd. reported Thursday it swung to a loss in its fiscal second-quarter on weak performance in its storage-infrastructure segment. Shares fell 7.5% to $9.49 in premarket trading as the storage-device maker projected a third-quarter profit below analysts’ expectations. Shares fell 4.7% to $9.78 premarket.
After shares of KB Home fell another 3% Thursday after Wednesday’s 15% plunge following the release of its fiscal second-quarter results, the company took the unusual step of issuing a statement after the bell to reassure jittery investors of its comfortable cash position. While the builder “will continue to evaluate its future cash requirements and financing opportunities available in the capital markets, there is no plan to issue equity,” it promises.
Goldman Sachs downgraded its stock-investment rating on Central European Media Enterprises to sell from neutral, reflecting the Eastern European broadcaster’s slowing growth profile and expectations of lower earnings. Goldman also cut its target price for the company. Shares fell 2.2% to $19.32 premarket.

Huge Twisted Cord Maker | The Embroiderer's Story
Genie asked a question to the blog the other day about the Grecian Twist and how it is made (It is in the finishing kit for the Tulip Slip ). I have a bit of info to add to the mix. First, here is a close picture of the Grecian Twist. It comes in two sizes, Fine and Medium. It is made from two strands of cotton covered with either a flat gilt strip or a thin gilt wire. It is the reflection difference between these two shapes that give the Grecian Twist its visual look – matt and shiny.
The two strands are made into a twisted cord in much the same way you would make it in to a four- strand twisted cord. Except you need a HUGE twisted cord maker and a very long hall as well as two people. When I was at Benton and Johnson, I saw this device and had a great laugh. Neil told me it was the twisted cord maker for the Grecian Twist. I loved it so much that I took a picture with it for scale.
