Va. couple says 137 defendants responsible for mesothelioma

CHARLESTON -- A Collinsville, Va., couple is suing 137 companies they claim are responsible for a mesothelioma diagnosis.

Larry Issac Nolen was diagnosed with mesothelioma on Feb. 24, according to a complaint filed April 27 in Kanawha Circuit Court.

Nolen claims he smoked cigarettes from 1960 until 1989, but has since quit.

The Virginia man was employed by the defendants between the 1960s and 1980s. His father was also a pipefitter in the 1950s and 1960s, according to the suit.

Nolen claims the defendants caused his mesothelioma because they failed to warn him of the dangers.

The defendants are being sued upon theories of negligence, contaminated buildings, breach of expressed/implied warranty, strict liability, intentional tort, conspiracy, misrepresentation and post-sale duty to warn, according to the suit.

Nolen and his wife, Annie B. Nolen, are seeking a jury trial to resolve all issues involved. They are being represented by Victoria Antion and Gary W. Kendall

The case has been assigned to a visiting judge.

Tire Works hopes to open in August | Pahrump Valley Times

Tire Works is coming to Pahrump. If you drive by the old location for Grease Monkey, you might have noticed the increased activity and construction.

Grease Monkey, owned by Stephanie and Scott Hunt was vacated in February.

Tire Works, a Las Vegas based business, bought the property from The FDIC for $446,000, and hopes to have the new construction done by Aug. 5. Tire Works was unable to comment on the opening of the new store.

The construction bid was awarded to Morales Construction and Top Rank Builders. The old Grease Monkey was razed and two new buildings are being built on that site.

Back in February, Scott and Stephanie both voiced concerns over the basement. The Hunts thought the basement would be a problem for future owners, but Tire Works ran into no problems with the basement by the construction of a second building in the back. The basement was left intact by Morales Construction.

Rene Morales said, “We had no problems with the basement. The oil tanks are still there and we left them empty. The basement was not filled in with concrete. It was left there for storage, and for now will remain the same.”

Morales has been working on the project for a week and feels he is way ahead of schedule.

“I intend to complete the project in four weeks. We will be remodeling the front building and working on another building in the back. Like the Senior Center, I am trying to use all local subs.”

TireWworks is a Las Vegas operation that has 14 locations in the Las Vegas area. They will be offering a full range of tire services, including wheel balancing, tire rotation, air conditioning, lube and oil changes, shocks and struts, transmission service, exhaust and computerized engine diagnostics.

The tire dealer is a Bridgestone/Firestone affiliated dealer but will carry other major brands like Yokohama, Pirelli, Continental, Dayton, General Tire, Fuzion, Cooper and others.

Local shoppers can’t keep secrets

The secret is out. Secret Sisters Boutique, a women’s consignment shop, has moved into a bigger store at 2341 E. Postal Road, across from the post office.

Four ladies own the store, one is a silent partner. Sharon Stone, Cindy McGrath and Sherry Rhine share the responsibilities of running the shop. Spokesman Sherry Rhine said the bigger space is a plus. “We were just getting too cramped. You couldn’t see what we had or find anything. Now we have the space to spread things out so you can see what is there,” she said. The store went from 1,300 square feet to 2,400 square feet, and Rhine said the racks are already full.
