Environmentalism is a revolutionary ideology, deriving much of its thinking, rhetoric, and practice from the left. Like other left-wing cults, it is explicitly anti-capitalist. But environmentalism goes one step further -- while the left wishes to remake industrial society according to the Marxist model, the Greens wish to simply abolish it and return to a mythical "natural" state. What easier way to accomplish that then to cut the West's energy lifeline? One, I support self-governance over big government. I don’t want “government” to tell me what to do, no matter whether it be local, state or federal. I don’t want them to tell me what I can’t do, either, except in the narrow perspective wherein what I “do” hurts someone else. That is to say, I can wildly swing my fists around in the air, but I can’t hit your nose, and government should have a mandate that states that: no hurting of others. When you take that mandate, of total freedom of action except or unless the action hurts one or more others, many laws become logical and reasonable. Thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not go around beating up others, thou shalt not drive 100 miles per hour in a school zone (or anywhere else except on a race track designated for the purpose). If your home is on the bank of a stream, don’t dam up the stream and prevent it from ever flowing downstream; don’t pour sewage or other pollutants into the stream; don’t spread a net across the stream and take 100% of the fish; don’t pour a red dye on the stream. You get to use the stream, and enjoy the stream, but you can’t monopolize it, and you can’t damage or hurt it in a manner that prevents others from using and enjoying the stream. These are pretty straightforward, and have been with us for eons. The prohibition against killing and stealing are in the Old Testament, and in the very first recorded laws, the Code of Hammurabi. The legal uses of flowing water were adjudicated and determined in Roman times, and done so precisely so that downstream farms and homes could also use and enjoy the stream or river. But lately, the mandate of “can’t hurt” has shifted so that government wants to intrude on what I do or can do to myself. This nanny state wants to put me on a healthier diet, keep me from the evils of smoking, force me to exercise. It’s all “better” for me.
