Careful, these guys bite hard

"Oh, yeah, that was really cool," said Martin, a born-in-Stockton guy who plays guitar in Hollywood-based Vampires Everywhere! "That's big-time. You know, the article itself? Whatever. Just the fact of being able to be in The New York Times is really cool. A really good feeling."

Martin, 23, a Lincoln High School graduate whose band name is "Graves," was delivering packages for DHL in Stockton and Sacramento's industrial areas when he experienced an epiphany.

"It was fine," he said. "I was making great money and kind of had a band on my mind. I just decided, 'I don't wanna do this anymore.' "

As part of what he does now, Martin drives back into Stockton on Monday with Vampires Everywhere! The hard-rock band plays at the Plea for Peace Center with six other groups on the Horror Nights 2011 tour.

Though a New York Times critic's May 22 assessment of the group's "Kiss the Sun Goodbye" debut (released May 17) was typically smarmy, that level of exposure for a rookie band from Hollywood - even one with a vampiric vibe - is very unusual.

"Well, it was an honor for them to write about us," said Orlando, the lead singer whose band name is Michael "Vampire." "I wasn't excited about what was written. Our fans were not pleased.

"They (the Times) were more or less being commercial. Appealing to an audience that's not our fan base. I totally understand what they're trying to say. Honestly, though, it was cool. Totally."

Especially for Orlando, who grew up on New York's Staten Island before his parents retired and moved the family to Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Trouble is, he said, the Times' take relied on vampire-zombie cliches (the "Twilight" books and films). It also was less-than-complimentary.

Orlando and Martin said they truly share a vampire lifestyle and spirit - which has nothing to do with biting people on the neck and drinking their blood.

Orlando discovered his vampiric side when a "girl in Texas" identified it for him. Martin subsequently was tuned in by Orlando.

"It's pretty interesting, actually," Orlando said. "It changed me completely. I've mellowed out a lot more. I don't care as much what people say. You know, 'You're a satanist. Oh, my god, a satanist.' I have belief in myself. What I hear and say. How I see and perceive. People think the first thing you're gonna do is turn into a bat and bite their neck.

I’m sorry but the Twilight jokes are getting REALLY old. In fact it’s starting to give me a headache. I like to see new jokes. Besides the only problem I see with Twilight is, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and the stupid fan-tards who make their whole life revolve around Twilight. They are the real culprits that nobody likes it. Cause they like to force it on people. I am a fan of only the books but not a die-hard fan that thinks of nothing but the book. Oh and also the sparkles I hate. Best thing in Twilight is Alice.

Have you actually ever read the books? I’m not a huge fan but I read them, I enjoyed them as the the badly-written romance novels they’re supposed to be. If anything, it glorifies female submission and inserts Morman messages (like not having sex until marriage) but it does /not/ glorify spousal abuse or pedophilia. The guy may have been living a long time but the whole point is that they don’t age. They’re “stuck” at the age they get turned at. As for the abuse part, I can only think that you’re talking about the scene where they have sex and she has bruises or whatever. Spousal abuse has to do with the partner NOT CARING that they hurt the other person, and doing it on purpose. In this case the guy hates himself for hurting her and doesn’t mean to.

Anyways, tl;dr, blahblah. If you’re going to rag on Twilight at least know what parts of the book should be condemned instead of just repeating what people who don’t know what they’re talking about have said on the internet.

I’m Homosexual and I see nothing “Gay” about this. Is it because their hands are touching? Really?

It seems like two guys can’t stand next to each other without someone yelling “No Homo” these days.
