My parents always told me and (my siblings) that we won the birth lottery in life because we were born in the U.S.A. with so many opportunities and freedom, she said. Theres whats called book famine, which is a lack of education, and I thought to myself that I could knock out both problems by using books to educate girls. When we first started (the program) in 2008, we brought down about 500 pounds of books, we set up the program in one school, we had about 50 girls in our program and we were impacting nearly 800 kids, Hill-McNamara said. Two Central Jersey teens deserve a special hug of congratulations: They are recipients of Build-A-Bear Workshop's 2011 "Huggable Heroes" award.
Shannon Hill-McNama'ra, 18, of the Basking Ridge section of Bernards, and Rujul Zaparde, 16, of Plainsboro, are two of 10 young people from the United States and Canada selected for the award. They were chosen for demonstrating outstanding leadership, service and compassion to make the world a better place.
Hill-McNamara, a recent Ridge High School graduate who will attend Rice University in the fall, founded an educational program in Africa after visiting at age 15.

"My family started the tradition of taking international volunteer trips as summer vacations. When I was 15, we went to Africa. There's lots of gender inequality. There's what's called 'book famine,' which is a lack of education, and I thought to myself that I could knock out both problems by using books to educate girls."
Her program, called Shannon's After-School Reading Exchange (SHARE), empowers girls in Africa through reading. Through her program, she has created and filled libraries with donated books. She has raised more than $200,000 for the libraries, collected 23,000 books and brought electricity to three schools.
"When we first started (the program) in 2008, we brought down about 500 pounds of books, we set up the program in one school, we had about 50 girls in our program and we were impacting nearly 800 kids," Hill-McNamara said. "Now in 2011, we have 500 girls in program right now, we're impacting 8,000 students and teachers in Tanzania and we've provided electricity for four schools."
Hill-McNamara intends to bring SHARE to Rice University and ultimately see the organization established in other countries as well.
Zaparde, a junior at The Lawrenceville School, co-started a program called Drinking Water for India. He was inspired by a trip he took to visit family in India in 2007.
"When I visited India in January of that year, I had the chance to visit the remote village of Paras," he said. "When I went there for the first time, I saw that villagers had to walk kilometers to their nearest water source, often multiple times a day. What also surprised me was that oftentimes the water wasn't even clean.
