CANAAN-six days into his trip transcontinental, the Big Green Bus from Canaan Friday Vali Valenti's house, where she happily played host for the night for his son, Jules, and his 12 companions. Young people, all graduate students or 2011 Dartmouth, are between 12,000-mile journey across the continental U.S. in a bus powered by used vegetable oil. In just 11 weeks, the bus will travel through 31 states and along both coasts before returning to its starting point in Hanover, NHOn the way, the Big Green Bus crew stages events to raise awareness across the country on sustainability. The students had traveled to Maine and Boston, Massachusetts after leaving Canaan, has received a demonstration on the Sherman Green. This is the seventh time the students of Dartmouth were the summer excursion. The current bus, which is the fourth used by teams from Dartmouth, made its maiden voyage. It was offered by Greyhound and converted for the project by the students. "We had to dump everything and go," said Joseph Coleman of San Diego, California, A recent graduate and a student to make the trip. "It was hard work." Electricity on the bus is provided by solar charged batteries and there is a hyper-efficiency mini-kitchen in the back of the bus. Cradles and seats are strategically placed in the bus and each rider is provided with a square of a cubic foot in which the objects of his store. "It really makes you decide what is important to you," said Coleman."We try to show good practice," said Jules Valenti of Canaan, who graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth this spring with a degree in mechanical engineering. Mr. Valenti, who received his undergraduate degree in physics from Bowdoin, is one of four engineers on board. They designed the fuel system of vegetable oil that powers the bus through most of his journey. It has raised panels on the side of the bus to reveal the tanks containing 290 gallons of used vegetable oil used to power the bus.There are two tanks, one for "dirty" oil, which contains pieces of food and water from cooking to fast food, and one for "clean" the oil that had these contaminants removed. Mr. Valenti said that dirty oil is allowed to settle, then the contaminants are removed from the bottom of the tank.
