Up to this day, Claude Cahun's self-portraits have aroused the greatest interest among theoreticians of contemporary culture. By becoming at once both the object and the subject of her artistic experiments, the artist reinvented herself through photography. With an acute sense of "performance," dressed as a woman or as a man, with her hair short, long or shaven, and with carefully chosen props (masks, capes, overgarments, glass balls, etc.), Claude Cahun used her own image to expose the clichés of feminine and masculine identity. His significant contribution to understanding and research on human development in South Africa, the outstanding quality and content of his work, his innovations in photographic representation, his acute insight into the symbolic meanings of landscape and into the reciprocal relations between environment and development, all make Santu Mofokeng a major South African artist. Over 200 images (photographs and slide show) as well as texts and documents produced over the last thirty years offer a broad introduction to his work. The selection from the photographic essays affords insights into the Soweto of his youth, everyday life on farms and in townships, representations of the self and family histories of black South Africans, religious rituals and landscapes—including his most current project Radiant Landscapes , commissioned specially for this retrospective. The members of this Marble Club ( Billes-Club ) meet regularly to play throughout the duration of the exhibition. The steel marbles designed by France Fiction for this game are all unique. Each piece is engraved with an expression or a word chosen by a founding member of the club: during the game, the combinations of engraved words illustrate the different degrees of significant or accidental harmony between the players.

Several occult authors over the years have dipped their toes into writing fiction, most recently Raymond Buckland and Donald Michael Craig , what prompted you to go this route?

“Aleister Crowley — Revolt of the Magicians” is actually my second novel. The first, “Accidental Christ — The Story of Jesus as Told by His Uncle” came out a few years ago. “Revolt…” began not as a book but as a screenplay I was hired to write about 10 years ago.It was optioned by a film production company, and for a moment seemed that it would really happen ... but nothing came. I had more or less forgotten about it when I was contacted again about nine months ago. As it turns out another company interested in film history, but for the project to qualify for partial funding (whatever the latest incarnation of ...) UK Film Council is the scenario be written by a British or Commonwealth citizen. They could, however, to adapt the screenplay from a novel written by a Brit not. So I transformed my screenplay into a novel so it might be transformed into a screenplay. Have I confused you enough?

I love the genre of fiction. It is like taking a holiday. I love creating characters and breathing life into them … observing them develop and behave in my mind like independent entities. It’s very magical.

‘Revolt’ is a fantasy (albeit based on historic events and characters) about Crowley and his involvement in the breakup of the Golden Dawn.

You’ve written about Aleister Crowley and his teachings for several years, so it must be something of a “no-brainer” to make him the protagonist of your novel. Did your experience and history make it easy or hard to put yourself inside the head of this fictionalized Crowley?

It was curiously easy, and lots of fun.

Literary works featuring Crowley, or ficitonal characters based on Crowley, have been appearing since 1908. Crowley himself engaged in the practice for “Moonchild”. Do you feel this long literary history influenced you at all? Is there a sort of “fictional” Crowley egregore that feeds the many, many, “Crowleys” in various mediums?

I can’t say it influenced me at all. I wanted to follow a young Crowley, brilliant, naive, passionate … encountering for the first time the world of magick and the secret forces that would later shape him into an adept. This Crowley has never to my knowledge been explored in literature.
