"I was a very mediocre guitar player before, then I got to see the ukulele on the internet," Lorenzo said.
"I fell in love with it. It was like I was a violinist who didn’t know the violin existed."
Lorenzo is one of the headlining acts who arrived in Cairns this week for the city’s second annual Ukulele Festival.
The Italian born-and-bred performer describes his music as rock uke infused with a healthy dose of Spanish guitar.
"I learned the Spanish guitar from a friend of mine," Lorenzo said. "This gives it a sort of rhythm that was not yet played on the ukulele. I also write my own songs so, hopefully, it’s something that people have never heard before."
Lorenzo will take to the stage with 10 other international performers at the Tanks Art Centre on Sunday, as well as helping Cairns attempt to break the world record on Saturday for the largest number of ukuleles playing the same song at the same time.
Cairns Ukulele Festival organiser Gaby Thomasz is confident Cairns can crack the record of 851 this year.
"We came close last year, so it should be possible if everyone with a uke comes out," Ms Thomasz said.
"Anyone who hasn’t got one, they can come on down and grab a uke and learn how to play – it’s very easy."
