“It’s all about strong and healthy hair,” said Dr R. Govindarajan, principal scientist, research and development, Himalaya Herbal Healthcare, India, who was in Kuala Lumpur recently.

“Himalaya Herbals Protein Shampoo has natural ingredients like fenugreek, papaya and chickpea which nourish the hair. With the right nourishment, hair becomes stronger,” he said.

Why are girls in shampoo ads often stereotyped as having long and beautiful (jet black) hair?

“Generally, it’s harder to manage long hair. So, if the shampoo is good enough for long hair, it’s good enough for those with shorter styles,” he explained.

Traditionally, a shampoo was meant to only cleanse hair and the scalp. But these days, people expect more out of a shampoo. “They want more shine, volume and bounce in their hair,” he said.

Consumer habits and demands have also changed over time.

“What started off as a simple shampoo for hair has since spawned many variants. Nowadays, people need specific shampoos for specific concerns,” said Govindarajan.

It takes seven to eight years to come out with a new shampoo. He explained that they would have to be clinically tested on more than 100 healthy volunteers for safety and efficacy.

The brand does not market shampoo specifically for men but if there’s a demand, Govindarajan doesn’t rule out the possibility of Himalaya coming up with a variant just for men.

Regardless whether it’s for the European, Middle East or South-East Asian market, Himalaya shampoo variants, he said, are able to cater to different hair types.

Based on consumer studies, the label has come up with five shampoo ranges: anti-dandruff, anti-hair fall, protein conditioner, protein shampoo and protein shampoo (2-in-1).

Gentle shampoos are for those who wash their hair more often. “A harsh shampoo makes hair dry and strips the scalp of natural secretions. On the other hand, a gentle shampoo maintains the ‘naturalness’ of hair,” he said.

Despite that, some people prefer to use a baby shampoo.

“That’s because they think it’s very mild. Such shampoos are gentle on babies’ hair and scalp, which don’t accumulate so much dirt (like adults).” But baby shampoos don’t cleanse that well.
