LAW peace project gets page in Big Book
SHIRLEY -- When LAW third-grader Dana Maloney read "Three Cups of Tea" last summer, the story inspired him, said his mom, Dina Samfield. "He wanted to do something (in terms of education) to help kids in East Asia and Afghanistan," she said.
The result was "Pennies for Peace," Dana's special project.
The joint mother-son effort evolved into a school-wide campaign organized by Dana's class to collect pennies that would go toward schools and school supplies for children abroad through the Central Asia Institute. The successful campaign raised $175 for the cause. The students counted and rolled all of the coins collected themselves, and project sponsor Fidelity Bank checked the change count and provided the check for the CAI, Samfield said.
The "Pennies" project also branched into "Lura White for Peace" by Dana, Michael Woodland and Ian Shack, one of several computer-class projects presented recently at the school.
All the students in Kristen Lynch's class made multicultural collages for the project, using textiles and other touchable materials to create them. The cut-out motif as well as the message was inspired by "Listen to the Wind," a children's picture-book based on the "Three Cups of Tea" story.
The collages will be included in "Pages for Peace," which is arguably the most extensive and longest-lasting extra-curricular project in the history of the Groton-Dunstable Regional School District. Sizewise, it may be the biggest student project ever.
Still a work in progress, the Big Book continues to grow, gaining local momentum and national recognition.
Groton-Dunstable Middle School teacher Betsy Sawyer and her after-school student club have been working on the "Big Book" for several years, from the initial concept to collecting letters from "peacemakers" all over the world.
They've raised awareness and are still raising funds to turn a super-size idea into a tangible tome that will weigh about a ton and will require a flatbed trailer for transport and a mechanical arm to turn its 20-foot by 12-foot pages.
The peacemakers have been invited guests at the UN twice and have visited the site of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City, where they met firefighters that responded that day.

In a way it's like history repeating itself. For example in the mid 1980's when I first graduated college and entered the corporate world WordPerfect was the big name in word processing and Lotus 1-2-3 was the spreadsheet of choice.

The cotton class at the University of Memphis looked pretty typical this week -- a teacher, a white board and a PowerPoint presentation. But it wasn't just some history lesson on Eli Whitney. "We want to be sensible in our buying.

Please also note that labor is filed based on the degree and experience requirement of the job. By law if the requirement is only undergraduate degree for the job, the employer cannot file in EB2 just because the applicant has a masters degree or more experience than needed. So you cannot really put this arguement here because it will be against the rules. The root cause of the problem is limited greencard quota for EB3. And the solution is to get recapture, get rid of country limits, STEM exemption. Any single relief itself will be huge for all of us. With 179 phone calls and $16656 collected in last 3 months, I do not see that happening. It will need a far more bigger and determined effort. Such amount can be spent on full scale lobbying in just one month. 179 phone calls are nothing if we have to make a compelling case for ourselves. So although we might be near the bottom of real estate market, we can never guesstimate the bottom until it has passed. My advice is, negotiate hard(buyers market) and get into a deal now. As a safety net, you can ask for a long escrow(around 180 days). That way you can backout of the deal if things head south. You've only lost the deposit(subject to arbitration at least in California). 5 years is too less (you have to hold it for around 10 yrs minimum). 2 years the prices may/will fall. 2 years it would be steady and maybe start increasing slowly after that. so if you buy a house (depends on area ....but broadly) ..a 100K investment in RE (And if we take the best case scenario) after 5 years would be worth 80, 000. if you take inflation in to account. in the end it is supply and demand -- supply is huge. where is the demand going to come from ?? immigration is tight and in the fast moving life -- people have fewer and fewer kids. if u want to be safe - cash is good (atleast principal is safe if you get around 4 percent return) ..it is best to have diversified portfolio. many of my friends have put everything in RE and are worried now In that case, I honestly don't know why a lawmaker would care much about faster GC processing. if I was a lawmaker and someone comes to me complaining about USCIS - I would think in my mind "hey that is the system ..live with it". I would think the lawmaker would be thinking about other things (like having fun :-)) ..or taking care of the lobbyists who give them donations. Big problem for him is that he used ac21 and is self employed and not on H-1b anymore.
