Diesel sale in city goes down by 5%

PUNE: After the recent hike in diesel prices by Rs 3.78, diesel sales within the city have reduced by five per cent. Meanwhile, sales of diesel at pumps outside Pune's municipal limits have shot up by 10-20 per cent, said city-based petrol pump owners.

Diesel is cheaper by Rs 1.20 at pumps outside the city limits as no octroi is levied on fuel outside Pune's peripheries.

Ali Daruwalla, spokesperson of the Petrol Dealers' Association said that outbound truck drivers have been refuelling from outside the city limits since a long time, even more so after the hike. "Many of them, including inbound tempo and tanker drivers, also stock up extra diesel to be used within the city by filling it in plastic cans, which is illegal," said Daruwalla.

PMC octroi chief Hemant Nikam said that he was not aware of such acts as the octroi vigilance team is always on the look out. "Those who transport diesel in this manner are fined heavily. The fine imposed is ten times of the fuel's octroi amount," he added.

Meanwhile, the owner of a petrol pump located in Kondhwa Budruk, which is just 500 meters from the city's octroi limits, said that diesel sales at his pump have dropped by 30 per cent since the hike. "I would sell 8,000 litres of diesel per day before the hike, which has now come down to 5,000 litres a day. However, the pumps outside the municipal limits are often crowded with vehicles. Sometimes outbound vehicles stop at my pump for a small amount of diesel, only so they can tank up from a pump outside the city's peripheries," he said.

Daruwalla added that one litre of diesel within the city costs Rs 45.78, while the cost of the same amount of diesel outside municipal limits is Rs 44.58. There are 120 petrol pumps in the city, while about 230 pumps, which are close to Pune but outside the municipal limit.

"Sales of diesel in my pump have come down from 3,500 to 3,000 litres per day after the hike. The nearest pump outside the municipal limits is just five km from my pump on Solapur highway. Transporters and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) passing by my pump often fill a little diesel from here and then stock up once they cross city limits," said Daruwalla.
