Christian Curmudgeon Condemns “Go the F*** to Sleep”
I’m not a prude. I swear.
I was raised in a devout but non-legalistic home. There was a stretch in grade school and junior high when I swore like the sailor who made other sailors blush. Even today, there are one or two of the lesser expletives that escape my lips on rare occasions. I enjoy sharing a glass of wine, a beer, or a Long Island Iced Tea with friends, or (more rarely) a cigarette or two. I laugh at crude jokes, enjoy high school gross-out movies much more than I should, and find the florid foul language of some movie and TV characters hilarious. I’m not saying I find these things harmless . While I’m no rebel, I’m no Ned Flanders either.
So it’s with some curiosity that I find myself concerned by Adam Mansbach’s book, “Go the F*** to Sleep!”
I thoroughly understand the sentiment. I put my daughter to bed every night that I’m home. She’s a tenacious fighter, a headstrong spirit, and willing to cajole and manipulate, to lie or feign hunger or thirst, whatever it takes to keep her daddy in the room a little longer. I am a flawed and sinful parent. I get angry and overwhelmed, ashamed and defeated, exhausted and at the end of my rope all in a single night. So when I first saw the book title, and saw a PDF of the first couple pages, I laughed out loud and thought it a clever and harmless bit of bonding between parents over their shared exasperation.
I’m no longer so amused. The book is now a Grade A cultural phenomenon. You can hear it read aloud by Samuel L. Jackson. If you’re only familiar with the title, some of the complaints might seem overwrought. So if you don’t mind the language, you might want to listen before we go any further. Because there have I’m concerned that vulgarity has now officially entered the mainstream of our culture and I think people have to respectfully stand up and say “no thanks.”…I think we always have to ask ourselves: What kind of a culture do we want to live in? Because if we don’t think about that, and we don’t have the guts to speak up in a gracious and civil manner, then things will inevitably continue to slide in the same direction…Besides, a book with the title “Go the F*** to Sleep” is only one short step away from a hypothetical book written by a husband about his nagging wife, titled “Shut the F*** Up!

It brings to mind the famous “Landlord Pearl” videos from Will Ferrell. Karen's right that the sad reality is that many parents do speak to their children this way. It seems like every time I go to the mall, a carnival, or the aquarium, I hear parents

The short comedy feature with Will Ferrell playing the tenant scared to death of his pint-sized landlord is a cult classic. The short directed by Adam McKay and Drew Antzis was the perfect launch-pad for the website www.funnyordie.com,
There is no dramatic equivalent to such viral sensations as Funny or Die's "When Harry Met Sally 2" trailer, with Billy Crystal and Helen Mirren, or the Will Ferrell video featuring a toddler as his alcoholic, foul-mouthed landlord.

Will Ferrell's landlord problems - VIDEO
And this short featuring McKay and Ferrell as two roommates and their cranky landlord had me laughing so hard that milk spilled from my nose -- not milk I was drinking, but milk I haven't even drank yet. That's how incredibly funny it is. The short is only about two minutes long, and I can't tell you much more about it without spoiling it for you, so go watch it.
For more fun, check out this Will Ferrell movie generator . The generator pokes fun at the fact that Ferrell's comedy projects tend to have similar plots, but that's what makes them so great. There's so much comedy packed into them that the plot becomes meaningless. That's how Monty Python made moves, too, you know.

*Why are you down here? Go watch the video . (OK, or watch below) sarah
everyone who says they dont like will ferrel anyways why are you even watching and people who think this child is going to be damaged should lighten up. Your generations went through alot of things that were way worse then this and you are ok so chill out! She will be like every other kid who spend anytime around adults who dont always watch their mouths.
nikieveryone needs to relax about this short. Pearl is so young that she won't even remember what she said 30 seconds after she says it. haven't you seen how ADD she is, she's a regular two year old. personally i think its absolutely hysterical and i think everyone should take the stick out of their ass and appreciate it for its comedy. kids swear all the time, and i don't think she's going to grow up to be a drunk landlord, it seems her dad (McKay) has his head on straight. if anything, she'll This isn't child abuse, she's not working in a sweat shop or doing hard labor. until i hear that Pearl is an out of control toddler who is telling everyone to fuck off, i'm not too worried about her future.
stephanieI'm on everyones side when they say lighten up. I have a degree in child care and development and have been working with small children for years. I think thats the funniest short I've seen in a while. It could be that's she saying words that sound similar to swearing or she actually is, either way it doesn't matter, at her age she would forget those words extremely quickly, for it to have a permanent impact on the child you would need to say those words repeatedly over time and even then I'm sure she wouldn 't grow up a delinquent. I don't know about anyone else but I've been swearing since I was a child and have yet to cause the justice system any grief. oh and if you don't like Will Ferrell why the hell are you watching it anyway? Perhaps something went wrong somewhere during your cognitive development?
