Local trio in key Western swim meet
While Olympians Ryan Lochte, Michael Phelps and Missy Franklin contemplate the gold medals they won in the recent World Championships in Shanghai, three St. George-area youngsters - perhaps future Olympians - are in California competing in the five-day Western Zone Swimming Championships, which conclude Saturday.
Ten-year-old Eli Blanchard, 15-year-old Michael Pantelakis and 17-year-old Courtney Freed all qualified for the team that will represent Utah in the Western Zones at the Clovis (Calif.) Aquatics Complex largely by virtue of their heroics at the recently concluded Junior Olympics in Salt Lake City.
John McPhie also qualified, but due to a technical error, had not come in time and not make the trip.
Blanchard, Pantelakis McPhie and all swim team for the Dixie Aquatic Racing, while Freed flies the colors of the Swimming Association of South Utah. The trio is part of a team of 35 members of Utah under the tutelage of four coaches, one of which is Dani Caldwell, head coach of Susa and Pine View, Desert Hills and Hurricane High School swim teams.
"The Western Zone Championship is very difficult to qualify for," said Troy Blanchard, chairman of the DART, which is also the father of Eli Blanchard. "With athletes coming from Hawaii, the Pacific Coast states as well as Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Montana and Utah, competition is tough.
"We're especially proud of our DART swimmers," he added. "Our 14-and-under kids scored almost 1,000 points at the Junior Olympics meet, more than any previous DART team. And they beat some big teams like Orem, Murray, Kearns and the Devil Rays Aquatic Team."
The DART swimmers finished eighth overall in a 28-team Junior Olympics field with 1,070 points.
Eli Blanchard, in only his second year of competitive swimming, had a huge meet at the Junior Olympics, garnering three gold medals and eight silvers. He had some classic battles with Lucas Hess, another 10-year-old, of the Park City Swim Club. He finally beat Hess in the 100-meter butterfly, winning in a personal best time of 1:22.24.
Eli's other gold medals came in the 200-meter medley relay and the 200 free relay. In both races he teamed with Karson Barber, Ryan Bethers and Christian Rettie to out-swim the Park City and Hilltop Aquatics quartets in close races in the 10-and-under division.
Other strong performances by DART swimmers at the Junior Olympics were recorded by Connor Newman, 14, Camden Snow, 11, Tina Crum, 12, and Alina Barnes, 11. All four won silver medals in various events and recorded personal-best times.
