Enemy forces using FDI as the preferred method of attack on U.S. forces, this approach allows the attacker with a capacity of confrontation to launch an attack and then an opportunity to escape quickly in the area. At the time this article was written, from 40 to 60 percent of all attacks began with an IED, and from 50 to 70 percent of all U.S. casualties were caused by IEDs.

Most IEDs are unique because the manufacturers have to improvise with the materials at hand.IEDs are also designed to defeat a specific target or target type, so they become more sophisticated, they are usually difficult to detect and protect.
