Conservation Police stepping up holiday patrols
The Ministry of Natural Resources of Illinois (IDNR) conservation officers (CPO) will be in force during the fourth weekend in July on the lookout for boaters operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Boaters can expect to see enhanced patrols and stricter enforcement as ways to protect Illinois CPO weekend holiday to come.
IDNR Conservation Police suggest that anyone thinking of drinking alcohol while on the water have a designated skipper on board. Impaired boaters took this weekend can expect severe penalties. In Illinois, operating under the influence is a Class A misdemeanor for the first offense. It is punishable by a maximum of one year in jail and/or up to $2,500 in fines.

Illinois governor Pat Quinn signed a bill on Tuesday that legalizes muskrat trapping in the state. Muskrats are found throughout the state, and trapping of the species would be regulated by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
