Poppin' in for a party
FANS of Maryborough's favourite family festival flocked to the Mary Poppins Markets yesterday for a preview of the weekend's main event.
Town criers, Mary Poppins characters and one of the world's best jugglers were on hand to add to the magic and mayhem of the biggest and most colourful market day of the year.
Despite rain and cold winds, hundreds of visitors enjoyed children's rides, novelty races, workshops and the Heritage Market stalls.
Street performers including Admiral Boom and Mary Poppins wandered through the crowds.
Visiting town criers who will compete in the annual National World Town Criers Championships tomorrow judged the local town crier competition.
The Mary Poppins Festival fun will kick off tonight with a sing-along Mary Poppins movie night at the Brolga Theatre from 5.45pm.
Patrons are asked to dress up as their favourite Mary Poppins character and find their best singing voice for tonight's special performance.
Tomorrow's town crier championships will see criers fight it out from 10am, to see just who the nation's top town crier is.
The highlight of the week will be Sunday's Mary Poppins Festival in the Mary River Parklands which will run from 10am until 4pm.
There will be Poppins characters, madcap nanny races, chimney sweep challenges, street theatre, the Flipside Circus, shadow puppets, magicians, sidewalk art, steam train rides, brass bands, kite flying, a grand costume parade and high-energy musical entertainment.
