Celebrating Father's Day with 120 vintage autos

The 21st annual Father’s Day Invitational Auto Show in Yountville had something for each one of the hundreds who attended, whether it was a classic 1928 Model A Phaeton, a Woody in pristine condition, a classic police car or even a modern-day fire engine.

Some said the V Marketplace exhibition of more than 120 vehicles spanning nearly 100 years of production is a family tradition and the perfect way to spend Father’s Day. Others said it was simply the love of cars that brought them out.

St. Helena resident Gabriel Pastrama said the show is one way he and his 12-year-old daughter, Sofia, connect.

“We have two cars in the show and this has really become a tradition for our family,” Pastrama said. “It’s a nice event and gives us a chance to spend the day together and share a common interest.”

The non-competitive, open-class show drew some of the area’s finest vehicles and included Packard, Porsche, Ford Ferrari, Mercury, Muntz and other makes.

“I just enjoy looking at the cars and it’s something we can do together,” Sofia said as she perused the vehicles arm-in-arm with her dad.

April Mucci of Napa said the show has been a longtime Father’s Day tradition for her family, and she and her husband, Adam, enjoyed sharing the excitement of the day with their 3-year-old son, Austin.

“My father-in-law has a car in the show and it’s always been a family tradition for Father’s Day,” she said. “Austin just loves it, especially the fire truck.”

Though most of the sparkling cars were there only to be looked at, CalFire invited children to explore a fire engine and handed out fire hats and badges. The Napa Police Department also debuted a newly-restored car of its own.

“We just finished fixing this car up two weeks ago,” Napa Police Historical Society President Todd Shulman said of the 1957 Ford. “It was a two-year restoration effort and this is the first show we’ve taken it to. We’re going to use it at community events — we will take it to the Fourth of July Parade. The whole idea is to educate people and reconnect with history.”

Volunteers restored the car, complete with a bubble gum light on its roof and rifle secured to its dashboard.

“I think it’s special because it’s a community effort,” Shulman said. “A lot of volunteer work and donations put this together, which is why we’re proud of it.”

Jerry Freeman and his wife, Andrea, stumbled onto the show while visiting the area from their home of Atlanta, Ga., and said they were glad they did.
